More about our three bands

Main Band

In recent years, we have begun to take part in competitions. For many years we have competed in the Whit Friday Marches, made famous in the film ‘Brassed Off’. We love this event because it gives us the chance to get up close and hear the best brass bands in the business, among them Brighouse & Rastrick and Black Dyke. We just go for fun, but we unexpectedly won a prize this year!

In March 2016 the Main Band competed in the North West Regional Brass Band Competition for the fourth time. We achieved our highest placing to date and we believe our standard of performance has improved as a result.

Main Band rehearses every Monday evening 7:30-9:00pm in the bandroom at the Conservative Club, Crown Square, Penrith CA11 7AB

Intermediate Band

In 2015 we realised we had a new and talented group of players emerging who had mastered the basics but weren’t quite ready for the intricacies of the Main Band pieces. So we launched the Intermediate Band for people who:
  • have graduated from Training Band
  • haven’t played for a while and want to brush off the cobwebs
  • have experience playing in an orchestra or band on a non-brass instrument

Intermediate Band is not just a bridge between Training and Main Band. It is very much a band in its own right with its own repertoire and concert schedule.

We meet on alternate Thursdays from 6:45-7:45pm.

Training Band

Training Band is our band for beginners of all ages from seven upwards. Developing new musicians ensures the future of Penrith Town Band. We welcome new players – children and adults – who are keen to learn a brass instrument from scratch.

We encourage parents to learn alongside their children, rather than sitting in the car!

Members of our Main Band offer free tuition to new players. On Training Band evenings, they sit alongside and help the new players to develop musical and band skills.

The Training Band has its own programme of events. This gives our beginners valuable experience of the teamwork that goes into a brass band.

Everything will be provided for you, free of charge, from an instrument to uniform, music and tuition.

We meet on alternate Thursdays from 6:15-6:45pm
